Itchy, dry, barrier impaired skin?
Give my bath milk a whirl!
Soaking in bath milk for 15-20 minutes may help soothe itchy, dry, inflamed skin often attributed to conditions such as psoriasis and eczema/dermatitis or nappy rash and chicken pox.
Due to it’s tiny particles, the colloidal oatmeal binds to the skin and helps create a protective barrier on the skin. It contains water-binding polysaccharides (long chain sugars – also found in the milk powder) and hydrocolloids that hold moisture against the skin allowing it to act as an emollient. The fats contained in oatmeal also add to its emollient activity, which can improve the itch of dry skin. Oatmeal acts as a buffering agent that can help maintain the skin’s normal pH.
Milk contains lactic acid, which is a member of the family of alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) that break down the bonds between dead skin cells, removing them from the skin’s surface creating a gentle exfoliating effect. The molecules in milk means that it also works as a humectant — attracting water to the skin to boost hydration.
Dissolve 3 or more Tbsp of bath milk under warm running water and swirl bath water to disperse.
